Cubic Zirconia Rings for Men

What is cubic zirconia
Zirconium is a chemical element. Its name derives from a mineral named zircon, the Persian counterpart of which means “like gold.” This already explains why this element would feature in discussions about rings for men, especially with reference to engagements and weddings. But the element does not get fashioned into rings on its own. Cubic zirconia rings are of high value with regard to engagement and black tungsten carbide rings. Cubic zirconia is a cubic crystalline derived from zirconium dioxide. It is a hard synthesized material. Cubic zirconia is usually colorless, but allows being transformed into a number of colors.

Why cubic zirconia features in jewelry
The commercial production of cubic zirconia started in 1976 and since then, it has only gained in popularity in the jewelry industry. Especially with reference to engagement rings and wedding bands for men. That is certainly not without reason. It has a visual likeness to diamonds, but is much lower in cost and is also highly durable. Till the commercial production of synthetic moissanite started in the late 1990s, cubic zirconia ruled supreme in the world of synthetic diamonds.

Cubic zirconia: some interesting facts
Scientists researching the production of cubic zirconia were not really motivated by the gem industry to discover a cheaper substitute for diamonds on engagement rings or wedding bands for men. They were experimenting with the production of single crystal zirconia as a substitute for diamonds more for use lasers and other optical instruments. Natural cubic zirconia is rare. That is why scientists from different developed countries researched the possible production process of synthetic cubic zirconia. But once they cracked the process, cubic zirconia entered the jewelry industry in a proverbial vini-vidi-vici manner.

The popularity of cubic zirconia jewelry
It is hardly surprising that cubic zirconia gets used to extensively in engagement and wedding rings, especially for men. This look-alike substitute for diamonds come at a much cheaper price than real diamonds. A one carat real diamond with acceptable levels of cut, color and clarity costs about $1,500. One can get a one carat hand-cut and manually polished cubic zirconia gemstone for about $20. True, it does not quite compare with the durability of diamonds. But cubic zirconia is also fairly durable.

Some points to remember
Like all things in life, cubic zirconia engagement rings and wedding bands for men also face their own share of flak. Firstly, there are people who believe that to substitute real diamond with synthetic diamond is to demonstrate that one is not ready to spend for the love of one’s life. But then, if couples together decide that they would rather invest in something else, instead of spending a fortune on an engagement ring or a cubic zirconia studded wedding band for the groom, there is certainly no harm in getting one. They look equally, if not more, beautiful than real diamond. However, it is important to remember that cubic zirconia rings would not retain their sparkle forever. Cubic zirconia tends to cloud in about two years. Further, cubic zirconia is not as hard as diamonds. Cubic zirconia is quite hard and fairly scratch resistant, but anything harder can scratch it.
